Movie Review - Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Fantastic fun for the whole family.
Not really.
In "Alice in Wonderland," directed by Tim Burton, now 19-year-old Alice is welcomed back to the fantastical land that she went through 13 years earlier. There she meets up with the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, and encounters random creatures and objects including a floating, ghostly cat and a smoking caterpillar. Alice realizes that she is there to conquer the horrific Jabberwocky and restore the rightful queen to her throne.
How this film made over $1 billion, I will never know. Maybe everyone just wanted to see another performance by Johnny Depp. He isn't a bad actor at all, but his role as the Mad Hatter doesn't come close to the charming wittiness of Jack Sparrow.
I felt like I was on speed or something watching this movie. I guess it's supposed to be kind of a sequel to the hand-drawn version from the fifties and I actually remember being seven and liking it. But this one was just plain weird. The effects are pleasant to the eye, though nothing like "Avatar." I'll tell you when we saw trailers for it, my brother said it looked to him like a children's horror flick.
Rated PG for intense violence and perilous situations, far out of anything that young kids could view. But it was also PG for something that no other movie has been before: a smoking caterpillar. Yes, it literally says that in the MPAA rating! I guess they had to tell you some way that it isn't a human smoking.
Two stars (out of four) for the weird and vaguely unsatisfying, "Alice in Wonderland."

Emperor's thoughts... I think there was a little more to it. I really enjoyed Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Johnny Depp's performance was great, but it did seem similar to his Willie Wonka.
And the movie had a fun story with good action and effects. I could tell, though, that Burton was having a lot of fun with creepy things like having Alice jump onto floating decapitated heads.
Overall, I have to agree that it was a tad too creepy for Disney. Was it strange and seem like a bad trip? Sure, a little, but then again, so do the books. Disney originally painted the weirdness with a fun and light perspective. But Burton views the weirdness with a haunting and violent perspective.

The Mickey Mouse Revue, Walt Disney World 1971
The Mickey Mouse Revue performs at Walt Disney World 1971.
This animatronic musical show was moved to Tokyo Disneyland in 1983.
This attraction originally opened in 1971 at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and closed there in 1980 before moving to Tokyo. It was in the spot where Mickey's Philharmagic is today. It's kind of interesting how the two attractions are a different medium but the idea is still pretty much the same.

As part of today's 20th birthday event at the Studios, guests got to hear from senior members of Imagineering, including Bob Weis. (Bob was one of the key imagineers who originally created the studios). Most interestingly, he showed a photo looking along Hollywood Blvd towards the Chinese Theater prior to the hat install. He made comment that this view can't be had now, but MAY be had again in the future (sorry don't have the exact quote, no recording was allowed). This was met with huge applause from the gathered crowd, and lots of laughs from all three of the Imagineers. Bob in particular had the look of knowing something we don't. The hat was brought up a couple of times, and again, all three Imagineers laughed about it, and seemed to fully understand how it's not particularly liked by the fans. It may well be that too much is being read into this, but certainly today you could walk away with the impression that the hat is going to be removed.

Vergara joins The Smurfs and Happy Feet 2
Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family") has landed a pair of film roles, beginning with The Smurfs in which she will play one of the live-action roles as Odile, a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is the boss of the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris. The second film is a voice role in Happy Feet 2, which George Miller is already working on down under. So this is interesting because it looks like Smurfs is mixing live action with 3D, a successful formula for Happy Feet (although it was mostly 3D), Scooby Doo, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Flinstones, Casper, and Garfield (although barely successful for Garfield). Interestingly, Spielberg was behind Flinstones and Casper, but he seems to have given up on the cartoon revitalizations.

Don't ask, I just decided to combine Link's infamous catchphrase from the 1989 Zelda American cartoon (NOT anime) into one clip. Although I was surprised how often he says it and there's only 13 episodes in total! Warning: Extremely annoying.

Madagascar 2 was doing better than Madagascar 1 in its week 5 overall, but it already started dropping faster than Madagascar 1, resulting in lower sales.
Madagascar 2 in Week 5:
Weekend 5 sales: $5,079,120
Overall sales: $165,653,852
Madagascar 1 in Week 5:
Weekend 5 sales: $7,434,917
Overall sales: $160,191,242
The reasons for the sudden drop in sales
(1) There's a chance that people are getting smart this holiday season and recognizing that spending money on gifts leaves them with no money for movies. I think that's a factor, because all the holiday films were down, including solid attempts from blockbuster magnets Will Smith (Seven Pounds) and Jim Carrey (Yes Man).
That said, I'm also a firm believer in capitalism, and a few movies have faired okay in the fall/winter, including Twilight (released Nov. 21; total $167 million), and Christmas films "Marley and Me" (Owen Wilson + Jennifer Aniston + dog family film = gold), and Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories" (from Disney). So I don't think it's just the economy.
(2) Therefore I think Madagascar 2's extreme drop in sales also imply the hype was better than the movie.
(3) That said, it seems like we have an influx of holiday films this year that are attempts at blockbuster success, especially family friendly films. So the dollars are divided among...

I think they still might make another Madagascar movie, but the incentive has gone down quite a bit. I think DreamWorks was hoping to get the sales a little higher than the original, so they are probably thinking more about the Shrek and Kung Fu Panda franchises now and the newer attempts like Monsters VS Aliens, Puss in Boots, and others (Master Mind, How to Train a Dragon, and Crood Awakening, a caveman animation from the Lilo & Stitch director).

Weakly EDitorial: Rodney Dangerfield's best jokes
In honor of Rodney Dangerfield (who has passed on; November 22, 1921 – October 5, 2004), here are our favorite of his jokes, spun a little differently.
For those who don't know, Rodney was famous for one-liners, and he sometimes borrowed from other comedians, which, at the time, wasn't considered as big of a deal as it is now in the digital age. The "I get no respect" jokes were his trademarks, sort of how Jeff Foxworthy's are "You might be a redneck."
First, some general ones:
• You wanna have laughs? Do what I do. When I go through a tollbooth, I keep going. I tell the guy, "The car behind me is paying for two."
• I have to be the worst cook. In my house, we pray after we eat.
• I had my driver’s test the other day. I got 8 out of 10. The other 2 guys jumped clear.
• The other day I told my wife that our kids were spoiled. She said, "All kids smell that way." … Not sure if she was kidding.
• Once, somebody stole our car. The cops asked if I saw who it was. I said, "No, but I did get the license number." … They didn’t like that.
• I haven't spoken to my wife in years. I didn't want to interrupt her.
• I’m not the best driver. I once hit a deer… In a zoo.
I came from a tough neighborhood…
• I came from a real tough neighborhood. I bought a waterbed and found a guy at the bottom of it.
• People say fish is good for a diet. But fish in my neighborhood was never cooked in butter. Fish was cooked in natural oils - Texaco, Mobil, Exxon...
• I came from a real tough neighborhood. Every time I shut the window I hurt somebody's fingers.
• I went to a hotel in my neighborhood once, and they stole my towel!
• In my neighborhood, bath toys for kids were toasters and radios. … The strong survive.
• I came from a real tough neighborhood. Once, a guy pulled a knife on me. I knew he wasn't a professional, though; the knife had butter on it.

• I was so depressed that I decided to jump from the tenth floor. They sent up a priest. He said "On your mark... " … I lost my motivation. I wonder if that was reverse psychology… Probably not.
• When I was a kid my parents moved a lot, but it was okay; I always found them.
• The other night a mugger was about to mug me, but then instead he took off his mask and made me wear it.
• I went to the doctor because I'd swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills. My doctor told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.
• I asked an old man in the park, "How can I get my kite in the air?" He told me to run off a cliff.
• One time I told my boss I'm tired of running around in circles. So he nailed my other foot to the floor.
• When I was born, the doctor came out to the waiting room and said to my father, "I'm very sorry. We did everything we could. But he pulled through."
• When I was younger, a girl phoned me and said, "Come on over, there's nobody home." So I went over. Nobody was home.
• When I was a kid, I played in the sandbox, and the cat kept covering me up.
• I went to a freak show and they let me in for nothing. I was like, “Hey thanks! … Wait a minute!”
• I had plenty of pimples as a kid. One day I fell asleep in the library. When I woke up, a blind man was reading my face.
• Last week I told my psychiatrist, "I keep thinking about suicide." He told me from now on I have to pay in advance.
• The other day, my tie caught on fire; the fireman instantly showed up and tried to put it out with an axe.
• I asked the park ranger if I could go ice-skating on the lake. He told me, "Wait til it gets warmer."
• My uncle's dying wish was to have me sitting on his lap. He was in the electric chair.
