Movie Review - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
by Alex Popp
Fantastic fun for the whole family.
Not really.
In "Alice in Wonderland," directed by Tim Burton, now 19-year-old Alice is welcomed back to the fantastical land that she went through 13 years earlier. There she meets up with the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, and encounters random creatures and objects including a floating, ghostly cat and a smoking caterpillar. Alice realizes that she is there to conquer the horrific Jabberwocky and restore the rightful queen to her throne.
How this film made over $1 billion, I will never know. Maybe everyone just wanted to see another performance by Johnny Depp. He isn't a bad actor at all, but his role as the Mad Hatter doesn't come close to the charming wittiness of Jack Sparrow.
I felt like I was on speed or something watching this movie. I guess it's supposed to be kind of a sequel to the hand-drawn version from the fifties and I actually remember being seven and liking it. But this one was just plain weird. The effects are pleasant to the eye, though nothing like "Avatar." I'll tell you when we saw trailers for it, my brother said it looked to him like a children's horror flick.
Rated PG for intense violence and perilous situations, far out of anything that young kids could view. But it was also PG for something that no other movie has been before: a smoking caterpillar. Yes, it literally says that in the MPAA rating! I guess they had to tell you some way that it isn't a human smoking.
Two stars (out of four) for the weird and vaguely unsatisfying, "Alice in Wonderland."
Review by Alex Popp for The Animation Empire blog.
==================
Emperor's thoughts... I think there was a little more to it. I really enjoyed Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Johnny Depp's performance was great, but it did seem similar to his Willie Wonka.
And the movie had a fun story with good action and effects. I could tell, though, that Burton was having a lot of fun with creepy things like having Alice jump onto floating decapitated heads.
Overall, I have to agree that it was a tad too creepy for Disney. Was it strange and seem like a bad trip? Sure, a little, but then again, so do the books. Disney originally painted the weirdness with a fun and light perspective. But Burton views the weirdness with a haunting and violent perspective.

EPIC MATH RAP BATTLE LYRICS...
1. Math Rap Battle Intro
By Showtime
Our vision's that you're wishin
To listen to what we're spittin
So no skippin, or hissin,
Or dissin what we're dishin,
Cuz our mission is fishin
For errors in addition and division
In order to fix em
So the answer won't be missin
And now we got you twitchin and itchin
To hear what we been mixin in the kitchen
So let's switch it without intermission
Cuz time is tickin
2. The Powers Rule Rap
By Showtime
We don't want our mad tunes
To make you go 'boo'
So we're coming with some soul
Like Shaquille O'neal's shoe
But you know this isn't Algebra 2
It's Calculus hour
So let's switch it from quadratic
To a rule that has power
It's called the Power Rule
No it might not sound cool
But don't be fooled
Cuz it's the best like Liberty High School
And wait till the end to clap for me
Or laugh at me
So you can listen as I spit some math
Like Miss Hafferty
It's sad to see
That math makes some bewilder
But with the Power Rule
Homework goes quick, like silver
F of X equals X to the N
Then F prime of X is X to the N minus 1
The N must be a constant
Or the formula's nonsense
You see it's easy
It's really all there is
And we're not playing tricks
Because Trix are for kids
So remember F prime of X goes like this
It's N X to the N minus 1
This rule is easy and fun
It's N X to the N minus 1
I'm out of time
Oh shoot I gotta run
But before I go, it's N X to the N minus 1
Well that's the end of the show
So we're all gunna dash
But we hope it was hot
Like a menopause flash
3. Quadratic Formula Love Ballad
By KBB (not a rap song)
I once fell in love
With a certain formula
Her name was Quadratic
We were automatic
4. The Quotient Formula Rap (Hip-Pop)
By Notorious AB & BG For Real
I was sittin there taking notes in class
For a course known none other than Math
I wrote down somethin that Delistra said
Then a little ditty went a runnin through my head
It was the
Quotient Formula
I don't know quite how they found it
But hey, let me tell you how this went.
It went...
CHORUS: Down D Up (Down D Up)
Minus Up D Down (Down town)
And you put it all over Down Down
(Chorus X 2)
How do teachers come up with this stuff?
This curiculum, it sure is tough
Calculus, I've had enough
(Chorus X 3)
5. Mean Value Theory Rap
By Showtime & KBB
Now I know I want to make something you can feel
So let me keep it short and sweet
Like Rebecca Teel
Some of your math skills are weak
Like Achilles' heel
But if you listen they will be silky smooth
Like an eel
Make sure that you pay attention and hear me
Loud and clearly
Because I'm going to talk about the Mean Value Theory
Or Theorem like the book likes to call it
We got 2 necessary conditions
So let's get on it
F must have a derivative on the open interval
And it must be continuous on the interval
Close C C
Continuous close
And that's how it goes
Stay on your toes
Cuz these conditions are the prequel
But if you got em
This is what F prime of C equals
It's F of B minus F of A over B minus A
Remember this throughout your day
I said it's F of B minus F of A over B minus A
This formula's hot like the month of May
Or a sun ray
It's F of B minus F of A over B minus A
And before I send you on your way
It's F of B minus F of A over B minus A
Now that you know the formula
Study it well
And you'll be good to go
Like the commercials from Taco Bell
Enjoy!

The Mickey Mouse Revue, Walt Disney World 1971
The Mickey Mouse Revue performs at Walt Disney World 1971.
This animatronic musical show was moved to Tokyo Disneyland in 1983.
This attraction originally opened in 1971 at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and closed there in 1980 before moving to Tokyo. It was in the spot where Mickey's Philharmagic is today. It's kind of interesting how the two attractions are a different medium but the idea is still pretty much the same.
Here it is in Tokyo:

Will Mickey's Sorcerer's Hat be removed from Disney Hollywood Studios?
From WDWMAGIC:
As part of today's 20th birthday event at the Studios, guests got to hear from senior members of Imagineering, including Bob Weis. (Bob was one of the key imagineers who originally created the studios). Most interestingly, he showed a photo looking along Hollywood Blvd towards the Chinese Theater prior to the hat install. He made comment that this view can't be had now, but MAY be had again in the future (sorry don't have the exact quote, no recording was allowed). This was met with huge applause from the gathered crowd, and lots of laughs from all three of the Imagineers. Bob in particular had the look of knowing something we don't. The hat was brought up a couple of times, and again, all three Imagineers laughed about it, and seemed to fully understand how it's not particularly liked by the fans. It may well be that too much is being read into this, but certainly today you could walk away with the impression that the hat is going to be removed.

Vergara joins The Smurfs and Happy Feet 2
Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family") has landed a pair of film roles, beginning with The Smurfs in which she will play one of the live-action roles as Odile, a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is the boss of the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris. The second film is a voice role in Happy Feet 2, which George Miller is already working on down under. Vergara joins a voice cast already made up of Brad Pitt, Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and Hank Azaria.
From:

===========
So this is interesting because it looks like Smurfs is mixing live action with 3D, a successful formula for Happy Feet (although it was mostly 3D), Scooby Doo, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Flinstones, Casper, and Garfield (although barely successful for Garfield). Interestingly, Spielberg was behind Flinstones and Casper, but he seems to have given up on the cartoon revitalizations.

Excuse me, Princess! - The Legend of Zelda cartoon
Don't ask, I just decided to combine Link's infamous catchphrase from the 1989 Zelda American cartoon (NOT anime) into one clip. Although I was surprised how often he says it and there's only 13 episodes in total! Warning: Extremely annoying.
Quick FAQ people brought up:
Why is Link's hair brown? - The cartoon was aired in 1989, and in the original Legend of Zelda games for the NES and artwork it showed Link with brown hair. So the artists weren't THAT far off.
Classic.
