Movie Review - Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Fantastic fun for the whole family.
Not really.
In "Alice in Wonderland," directed by Tim Burton, now 19-year-old Alice is welcomed back to the fantastical land that she went through 13 years earlier. There she meets up with the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, and encounters random creatures and objects including a floating, ghostly cat and a smoking caterpillar. Alice realizes that she is there to conquer the horrific Jabberwocky and restore the rightful queen to her throne.
How this film made over $1 billion, I will never know. Maybe everyone just wanted to see another performance by Johnny Depp. He isn't a bad actor at all, but his role as the Mad Hatter doesn't come close to the charming wittiness of Jack Sparrow.
I felt like I was on speed or something watching this movie. I guess it's supposed to be kind of a sequel to the hand-drawn version from the fifties and I actually remember being seven and liking it. But this one was just plain weird. The effects are pleasant to the eye, though nothing like "Avatar." I'll tell you when we saw trailers for it, my brother said it looked to him like a children's horror flick.
Rated PG for intense violence and perilous situations, far out of anything that young kids could view. But it was also PG for something that no other movie has been before: a smoking caterpillar. Yes, it literally says that in the MPAA rating! I guess they had to tell you some way that it isn't a human smoking.
Two stars (out of four) for the weird and vaguely unsatisfying, "Alice in Wonderland."

Emperor's thoughts... I think there was a little more to it. I really enjoyed Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Johnny Depp's performance was great, but it did seem similar to his Willie Wonka.
And the movie had a fun story with good action and effects. I could tell, though, that Burton was having a lot of fun with creepy things like having Alice jump onto floating decapitated heads.
Overall, I have to agree that it was a tad too creepy for Disney. Was it strange and seem like a bad trip? Sure, a little, but then again, so do the books. Disney originally painted the weirdness with a fun and light perspective. But Burton views the weirdness with a haunting and violent perspective.

The Mickey Mouse Revue, Walt Disney World 1971
The Mickey Mouse Revue performs at Walt Disney World 1971.
This animatronic musical show was moved to Tokyo Disneyland in 1983.
This attraction originally opened in 1971 at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and closed there in 1980 before moving to Tokyo. It was in the spot where Mickey's Philharmagic is today. It's kind of interesting how the two attractions are a different medium but the idea is still pretty much the same.

As part of today's 20th birthday event at the Studios, guests got to hear from senior members of Imagineering, including Bob Weis. (Bob was one of the key imagineers who originally created the studios). Most interestingly, he showed a photo looking along Hollywood Blvd towards the Chinese Theater prior to the hat install. He made comment that this view can't be had now, but MAY be had again in the future (sorry don't have the exact quote, no recording was allowed). This was met with huge applause from the gathered crowd, and lots of laughs from all three of the Imagineers. Bob in particular had the look of knowing something we don't. The hat was brought up a couple of times, and again, all three Imagineers laughed about it, and seemed to fully understand how it's not particularly liked by the fans. It may well be that too much is being read into this, but certainly today you could walk away with the impression that the hat is going to be removed.

Vergara joins The Smurfs and Happy Feet 2
Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family") has landed a pair of film roles, beginning with The Smurfs in which she will play one of the live-action roles as Odile, a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is the boss of the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris. The second film is a voice role in Happy Feet 2, which George Miller is already working on down under. So this is interesting because it looks like Smurfs is mixing live action with 3D, a successful formula for Happy Feet (although it was mostly 3D), Scooby Doo, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Flinstones, Casper, and Garfield (although barely successful for Garfield). Interestingly, Spielberg was behind Flinstones and Casper, but he seems to have given up on the cartoon revitalizations.

Don't ask, I just decided to combine Link's infamous catchphrase from the 1989 Zelda American cartoon (NOT anime) into one clip. Although I was surprised how often he says it and there's only 13 episodes in total! Warning: Extremely annoying.

Madagascar 2 was doing better than Madagascar 1 in its week 5 overall, but it already started dropping faster than Madagascar 1, resulting in lower sales.
Madagascar 2 in Week 5:
Weekend 5 sales: $5,079,120
Overall sales: $165,653,852
Madagascar 1 in Week 5:
Weekend 5 sales: $7,434,917

The reasons for the sudden drop in sales
(1) There's a chance that people are getting smart this holiday season and recognizing that spending money on gifts leaves them with no money for movies. I think that's a factor, because all the holiday films were down, including solid attempts from blockbuster magnets Will Smith (Seven Pounds) and Jim Carrey (Yes Man).
That said, I'm also a firm believer in capitalism, and a few movies have faired okay in the fall/winter, including Twilight (released Nov. 21; total $167 million), and Christmas films "Marley and Me" (Owen Wilson + Jennifer Aniston + dog family film = gold), and Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories" (from Disney). So I don't think it's just the economy.
(2) Therefore I think Madagascar 2's extreme drop in sales also imply the hype was better than the movie.
(3) That said, it seems like we have an influx of holiday films this year that are attempts at blockbuster success, especially family friendly films. So the dollars are divided among...

I think DreamWorks was hoping to get the sales a little higher than the original, so they are probably thinking more about the Shrek and Kung Fu Panda franchises now and the newer attempts like Monsters VS Aliens, Puss in Boots, and others (Master Mind, How to Train a Dragon, and Crood Awakening, a caveman animation from the Lilo & Stitch director).

I think they still might make another Madagascar movie, but the incentive has gone down quite a bit. I think DreamWorks was hoping to get the sales a little higher than the original, so they are probably thinking more about the Shrek and Kung Fu Panda franchises now and the newer attempts like Monsters VS Aliens, Puss in Boots, and others (Master Mind, How to Train a Dragon, and Crood Awakening, a caveman animation from the Lilo & Stitch director).

In honor of Rodney Dangerfield (who has passed on; November 22, 1921 – October 5, 2004), here are our favorite of his jokes, spun a little differently.
For those who don't know, Rodney was famous for one-liners, and he sometimes borrowed from other comedians, which, at the time, wasn't considered as big of a deal as it is now in the digital age. The "I get no respect" jokes were his trademarks, sort of how Jeff Foxworthy's are "You might be a redneck."
First, some general ones:
• You wanna have laughs? Do what I do. When I go through a tollbooth, I keep going. I tell the guy, "The car behind me is paying for two."
• I have to be the worst cook. In my house, we pray after we eat.
• I had my driver’s test the other day. I got 8 out of 10. The other 2 guys jumped clear.
• The other day I told my wife that our kids were spoiled. She said, "All kids smell that way." … Not sure if she was kidding.
• Once, somebody stole our car. The cops asked if I saw who it was. I said, "No, but I did get the license number." … They didn’t like that.
• I haven't spoken to my wife in years. I didn't want to interrupt her.
• I’m not the best driver. I once hit a deer… In a zoo.
I came from a tough neighborhood…
• I came from a real tough neighborhood. I bought a waterbed and found a guy at the bottom of it.
• People say fish is good for a diet. But fish in my neighborhood was never cooked in butter. Fish was cooked in natural oils - Texaco, Mobil, Exxon...
• I came from a real tough neighborhood. Every time I shut the window I hurt somebody's fingers.
• I went to a hotel in my neighborhood once, and they stole my towel!
• In my neighborhood, bath toys for kids were toasters and radios. … The strong survive.
• I came from a real tough neighborhood. Once, a guy pulled a knife on me. I knew he wasn't a professional, though; the knife had butter on it.

• I was so depressed that I decided to jump from the tenth floor. They sent up a priest. He said "On your mark... " … I lost my motivation. I wonder if that was reverse psychology… Probably not.
• When I was a kid my parents moved a lot, but it was okay; I always found them.
• The other night a mugger was about to mug me, but then instead he took off his mask and made me wear it.
• I went to the doctor because I'd swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills. My doctor told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.
• I asked an old man in the park, "How can I get my kite in the air?" He told me to run off a cliff.
• One time I told my boss I'm tired of running around in circles. So he nailed my other foot to the floor.
• When I was born, the doctor came out to the waiting room and said to my father, "I'm very sorry. We did everything we could. But he pulled through."
• When I was younger, a girl phoned me and said, "Come on over, there's nobody home." So I went over. Nobody was home.
• When I was a kid, I played in the sandbox, and the cat kept covering me up.
• I went to a freak show and they let me in for nothing. I was like, “Hey thanks! … Wait a minute!”
• I had plenty of pimples as a kid. One day I fell asleep in the library. When I woke up, a blind man was reading my face.
• Last week I told my psychiatrist, "I keep thinking about suicide." He told me from now on I have to pay in advance.
• The other day, my tie caught on fire; the fireman instantly showed up and tried to put it out with an axe.
• I asked the park ranger if I could go ice-skating on the lake. He told me, "Wait til it gets warmer."
• My uncle's dying wish was to have me sitting on his lap. He was in the electric chair.

Walden Media continues looking for a finance partner and director Michael Apted is still attached (along with the actors and crew).

Tidbits about Pixar
George Lucas sold Pixar to Steve Jobs.
Apparently in the mid 80s Lucas got a divorce and was strapped for cash. He sold Pixar to Jobs for 5 million. Pixar was the section that did all the technology for ILM (and also the animation through Lassetter, which was used to showcase the technology). So Lucas sold the technology, but he only sold a license of it, so that he could keep the technology and continue to build ILM on it. Pixar came with a license of the technology and all the assets. Steve Jobs used Pixar initially to sell hardware and software, but Lassetter’s little side projects soon proved to be the future of Pixar.
One interesting tidbit is that the first planned Pixar movie was “Monkey.” The budget got too high ($50 million back in the mid 80s) and Lucas pulled the plug.
It was also interesting that Lassetter had to be hired as a UI Designer (even though he was hired to make shorts) because Lucas didn’t want animators (he didn’t connect his effects projects with animation yet). Jobs seemingly allowed Lassetter and Pixar to pursue animation because the hardware and software businesses weren’t working. Jobs also almost sold Pixar to Microsoft, but he ended up believing in Toy Story at the last moment and instead sold use of patents to Microsoft, which is what saved Pixar and kept it going financially. Then on to commercials and movies.
Also interestingly, Jeffrey Katzenberg tried to hire Lassetter back to Disney after Lassetter released each of his animated shorts. Lassetter always said no. Eventually Katzenberg gave up and decided instead to offer a movie deal with Pixar, which is what led to Toy Story.
Katzenberg’s leadership in Disney’s early 90s animated film success is fairly evident. It also makes sense why he embraced 3D animation so quickly when he left Disney to form Dreamworks (resulting in Antz (which was the second 3D animated film, after Toy Story), Shrek, Madagascar, etc.).
So who wants to see the Pixar Monkey movie??? =^)
Can we make requests to Lassetter to go back and make this movie? Space Chimps is coming out, but I think the Monkey movie would have been a completely different story.

Disney's "Glago's Guest" clip and info about director
When Lasseter set to replace Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch) with a new director, one of the two directors he chose was Chris Williams, the creator/director of Glago's Guest, a new Disney short to be released next year.

It basically looks a little similar to the art style that Star Wars Clone Wars was pulling out, but it's even more realistic, and they totally nailed the animation and emotion (something sorely missing in the Star Wars animation). I'm very interested in seeing Chris Williams' work when Disney lets him write his own film. Trying to save Bolt, was destined to fail (it's Incredible Journey goes Hollywood; no reason to do that in 3D).
Before directing Bolt and this short, Chris was a writer at Disney on Mulan, Emperor's New Groove, Brother Bear, and now Bolt. (I loved Mulan and New Groove.)

Disney Repurposes Animation
This hilarious video shows how Disney has repurposed its animation. Some people have argued that this happened with films after Walt died (or as he was dying), but Disney directors have said in interviews that they repurposed animation throughout the company's history.
It gets really interesting at 1:03 where you see that the cat with flute in Robin Hood is the exact same cat as the one with the trumpet in Aristocats. Of course, we all know that the bears in Jungle Book and Robin Hood are the same. They're the same character design and feature the same voice!
So I think it would be possible to create a video 10 times this length if you wanted to go through all the animations.
It's also interesting to note that Disney did a lot of rotoscoping for the original animations in order to save time (it took a lot longer to get realistic animation without rotoscoping it).

Directors Love Actors 5: James Gray and Joaquin Phoenix
Collaborations: "The Yards," "We Own the Night," "Two Lovers"
The cinematic connection between writer/director James Gray and actor Joaquin Phoenix must be inspired by mutual respect and a shared perspective on the creative process, because it's clearly not about money. The fact that their previous two films together -- 2000's "The Yards" and 2007's "We Own the Night" -- made less than $30 million combined in the United States didn't stop Gray and Phoenix from reuniting on "Two Lovers," a romantic drama that premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews and few interested distributors; its producers, 2929, ultimately gave the movie to its sister company, Magnolia Pictures, who'll release it in January. Phoenix is Gray's go-to black sheep; in all three pictures he plays a ne'er-do-well who holds a family's fate in his hands. Gray needs Phoenix in particular because his films don't indict these screw-ups, and it takes an actor of Phoenix's caliber to craft characters we sympathize with even as they continue to disappoint us. In an interview with Cinema Blend, Gray defended Phoenix's repeat casting even though it hasn't translated to huge box office success. "I'm not trying say the things I've done are as good as this, but I don't remember anyone telling Martin Scorsese, 'You shouldn't work with Robert De Niro again, 'Raging Bull' was not a success.' "

New Tron cartoon on Disney XD
Disney XD orders 'Tron: Legacy' toon
Tron Legacy:
Disney is spinning its upcoming "Tron: Legacy" feature into an animated TV series.
Boy-centric cabler Disney XD has given a series order to "Tron: Uprising," which is set for a summer 2012 bow.
Charlie Bean ("Samurai Jack") will exec produce and direct, while "Tron: Legacy" writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will serve as consulting producers. "Tron: Legacy" co-producer Justin Springer is also on board.
"Tron: Uprising's" voice cast includes Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry and Lance Henriksen. Bruce Boxleitner will reprise his role as Tron.
Disney XD had already picked up a 10-part "Tron" microseries, which airs next fall.
Disney TV Animation is behind the show. Disney Channels Worldwide entertainment prexy Gary Marsh called the new show "a culmination of an extraordinary collaboration between Disney Television Animation and our feature film studio."

Tron Legacy:
Disney is spinning its upcoming "Tron: Legacy" feature into an animated TV series.
Boy-centric cabler Disney XD has given a series order to "Tron: Uprising," which is set for a summer 2012 bow.
Charlie Bean ("Samurai Jack") will exec produce and direct, while "Tron: Legacy" writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will serve as consulting producers. "Tron: Legacy" co-producer Justin Springer is also on board.
"Tron: Uprising's" voice cast includes Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry and Lance Henriksen. Bruce Boxleitner will reprise his role as Tron.
Disney XD had already picked up a 10-part "Tron" microseries, which airs next fall.
Disney TV Animation is behind the show. Disney Channels Worldwide entertainment prexy Gary Marsh called the new show "a culmination of an extraordinary collaboration between Disney Television Animation and our feature film studio."

Why is Disney/Pixar making a sequel to Cars?
First, let's talk about why they shouldn't.

Cars was clearly the stinker of the bunch, if $461 million, two Oscar nominations, and a Golden Globe could possibly be called a stinker. =^)
This makes me wonder why they’re making a sequel to Cars instead of The Incredibles, Finding Nemo (maybe a Crush movie), or Monsters Inc.
My answer is... Merchandise.
Merchandise is probably the motivation for creating a sequel to Cars, seeing how it certainly isn’t the Box Office. (It makes more sense from a Box Office perspective to do a Crush movie, or a sequel to Incredibles or Monster’s Inc.)
Disney made more money off of merchandising Cars than any other Pixar movie.
Disney makes more revenue in merchandising than any other source. Even in the parks, more money comes from merchandise than food or tickets.
I remembered reading an article where Disney said they were hitting it big with girls with the Princess franchise and hoped to continue to get merchandise brands out of Pixar from Toy Story (which was their biggest success with boys), Incredibles, and Cars. (On the DreamWorks side, I’m sure they’re raking it in with Shrek and Madagascar.)
On a side note, they should make an Incredibles cartoon and place it in the older time frame when Supers ran rampant. That’s where the big money is for boys: TV cartoons and related merchandise (Warner Bros. has banked on it for 15 years).
Plus Pixar probably already thought of a killer idea for a Cars sequel, and that’s a motivating factor. It doesn’t take much to think of a sequel to Cars. The concept has “road trip” written all over it (which is pretty much the whole story of both Toy Story movies and Finding Nemo), and the road trip concept wasn’t used to its fullest potential in the first Cars movie.

If this is true, it’s not surprising. Technically, Pixar came from George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and this is the same sort of thing they’re doing with their Star Wars movies. Pixar could do even better. Plus, the action-oriented films starring humans do very poorly in animation (Beowulf, Final Fantasy, Titan AE, Sinbad, etc.).
So Andrew Stanton may be uncovering new territory by making live-action films with an animation twist. The first film may be Princess of Mars (Andrew Stanton). Andrew Stanton is currently running Pixar, and he won an academy award for and had the biggest Pixar success with Finding Nemo (plus his Wall-E this year will surely also exceed expectations).
He would be leaving behind capable directors who will still concentrate on the animations, like Pete Doctor (directed Monster’s Inc., Mike’s New Car, and will direct Up in 2009), Lee Unkrich (co-directed Toy Story 2, Monster’s Inc, Finding Nemo, and will direct Toy Story 3 in 2010), Gary Rydstrom (directed Lifted (short before Ratatouille), and will direct newt in 2011; also won 3 Oscars for sound and 14 nominations), Brenda Chapman (directed Prince of Egypt, and will direct Bear and the Bow in 2011), and Brad Lewis (produced Ratatouille, and will direct Cars 2 in 2012).

Disney's Story Of Menstruation - 1946
A basic explanation of the purpose and process of menstruation, told largely with diagrams (and completely avoiding the subject of sex).
It was co-produced with Kotex to teach pre-teen girls about Menstruation, supposably. It only educates at a superficial level, so it does not go into heavy detail for the animated "Ram's Head"/ Reproductive System sequence.

"Family Guy" Goes Disney (VIDEO): The Pie Song
Methinks this universe has a little more Warner Bros. influence than Disney. There are a few things that push toward Disney, though, such as Lois in her Snow White clothes and Mr. Herbert as the Queen in witch garb. Good gag where they say no to the witch.
I don't actually understand the part where they beat the salesman.
What's also very interesting is that Fox is clearly spoofing other shows/brands here, including Disney and Robot Chicken. It's interesting because Disney wouldn't want Fox to do this (due to the blood), so they probably didn't get permission. Which means legally Fox would be relying on the parody laws to justify this (which are very gray right now). This is a good case to bring to Fox the next time they accuse of breaking parody laws when we spoof their brands (because they've done it 3 times purposefully and 1 time on accident, so far).

Movie Review - To Save a Life

Some people are just dying to be heard.
The most popular kid in High School feels like he's got the whole world at his feet until a childhood friend commits suicide in "To Save a Life."
The teenager had everything. He had a beautiful girlfriend, he was the champion in basketball and beer pong, and everyone loved him, but now after the death of his friend, he is forced to ask himself "Could I have saved him?" As he sets out to find out how he can stop others from doing the same, he gets acquainted with a local church and begins to have a change of heart, and it all leads to very surprising results.
This is definitely the kind of movie that should not have famous actors, and most of them are unknown except for Sean Michael Afable from "Akeelah and the Bee."
I was there when the whole youth group saw it back in February. The great thing was that I hardly knew anything about the movie until I saw it, and I was completely blown away. In fact, it's part of the reason I went to Reaching: Seattle. This film is so influential; it gets you waking up to the fact that there are some people who are literally dying to be heard.
By the way, if you search this title on the Internet Movie Database, you'll see all the data under "Fun Stuff," such as trivia, goofs, movie connections and quotes, which are, believe it or not, all posted by me.
Rated PG-13 for mature themes involving suicide, drugs, sex, partying and other bad teen habits, but should be seen by all teenagers. The rating is necessary, though it never gets anywhere near as bad as R-rated comedies. Focus on the Family even made a remark in their review that suicide, alcohol, sex, teen pregnancy, divorce, drugs, cutting, and hypocrisy aren't usually things they would list under positive elements. In this extraordinary flick, all this sin is dealt with in a Christian way.
Four stars (out of four) for the extraordinary and influential "To Save a Life," bound to be the best of 2010. I doubt even "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is going to beat it.

Directors Love Actors 4: Woody Allen and Scarlett Johansson

Collaborations: "Match Point," "Scoop," and "Vicky Christina Barcelona"
Three of the four movies made during Woody's Allen's recent European vacation have featured a prominent American character; in all three instances, that character was played by Scarlett Johansson. The three movies have very different tones and themes -- "Match Point" is a thriller with moral overtones, "Vicky Christina Barcelona" is a romantic travelogue and "Scoop" a goofy supernatural comedy -- but in each film, Johansson's role is roughly the same: the good-looking girl traveling abroad who enters a world (be it the British aristocracy, the Spanish art scene or journalism's homicide beat) for which she's not fully prepared. In the two comedies, her adventures are played for flirty laughs; in the drama, they drive her mad. Ironically, the partnership started almost by accident; Kate Winslet was originally cast in Johansson's role in "Match Point," but dropped out just before shooting started to spend more time with her family. Discussing Johansson's casting with the website Buzzine Allen noted that she was selected initially out of desperation but that he "became totally captivated by her. She was not only beautiful but also bright, amusing, charming and gifted." He's promised in many interviews to try to work with her whenever he's written parts for her, but their affair could be a strictly international one: ScarJo doesn't appear in Woody's next picture, a Manhattan-set comedy called "Whatever Works" starring Larry David and Evan Rachel Wood.

In the original comic strips by Peyo, and later on the animated TV show, the Smurfs lived in a European setting during the Middle Ages. The movie begins in the same era, but the Smurfs' arch-enemy Gargamel (played by Hank Azaria) invades their village and sends them running. According to director Raja Gosnell ("Scooby-Doo"), some of the Smurfs stumble into a secret part of the forest where "there's a magical portal that transports them to Central Park."
Lost in Manhattan, the Smurfs -- Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, Brainy, Gutsy, and Smurfette -- find a couple of human friends (Harris and "Glee" star Jayma Mays) who take them in. They look for a way home, but Gargamel also crosses into our world to track them down.
From the teaser trailer, it's apparent that the look of the computer-generated Smurfs is very faithful to the originals. They're blue-skinned, though with a textured, fuzzy-looking skin tone the cartoons couldn't capture. And of course they have their signature floppy hats (with Papa Smurf in red). He's not shown in the trailer, but photos of Azaria in costume as Gargamel have surfaced, and he also looks the part. He's bald, with prosthetic ears and a nose, and he's wearing a black robe and red shoes exactly like the animated version.
In addition to the human actors -- Sofia Vergara from "Modern Family" also plays a role -- the Smurfs are voiced by a wide range of comedic talents. Legendary standup Jonathan Winters plays Papa Smurf, George Lopez is Grouchy, "SNL's" Fred Armisen is Brainy, and Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) voices Jokey Smurf. Plus, pop superstar Katy Perry makes her movie debut as the voice of Smurfette.
"The Smurfs" will be smurfing their way onto the big screen on August 3, 2011.

An interesting approach. It definitely is interesting, and it probably has the most potential. I think they could have done a lot in the medieval times, but bringing the characters to present times and big cities has worked well for Alvin and the Chipmunks and Scooby Doo (and slightly for Garfield).
Plus giving the film the Scooby Doo director is almost guaranteed a hit.

Videogame Portable Wars: Nintendo DS VS Sony PSP
PSP is doing better than all the current consoles:
35.95M
They’re basically just surviving off the popularity of PS3 and PS2. As someone said, they’re just porting crappier versions.
DS is doing twice as good:
74.90M
So I consider PSP an intelligent business move for Sony, but it is directly connected to the success of PS2 and PS3. If Sony drops in the console race, the PSP will follow suit.
It’s actually similar to the Game Gear, which was dependent on the success of the Genesis. I think Sega may have innovated slightly more than Sony is though.
Meanwhile on the DS, Nintendo is innovating like crazy with the pen technology and the dual screen. They are also repackaging all their old 2D titles (that’s the beauty of Nintendo’s model: with each new system they resell every game they’ve ever made), they are really selling the value of their wireless connection (people are going crazy over it), they are innovating on the casual games front (jaw-dropping sales on Nintendogs, Brain Age, etc.), and they are listening very well to what consumers want (a Peach platform game, Mario and Luigi game, Donkey Kong, lots of Pokemon stuff, etc.). Plus the portable market seems to be even more focused on price point than the console market. And Nintendo always wins with the price point.
So Nintendo knows exactly what they’re doing in the portable market. I think we should avoid it and port our games to the other handhelds. If we can’t beat Nintendo on the console front, we have no prayer on the portable front. Nintendo has owned it since the Game & Watch days. The best we could do is emulate the PSP and make a few bucks porting crappier versions of our games to a portable system. I doubt we’d even have as much success as the PSP though, because they’re success is tied to the PS2, and we haven’t had anything on the console front that’s as successful as PS2.

Sony has yet to get their first 3D hit movie (Polar Express was a hit, but it was WB even though Sony animated it), but Chubbchubbs won the Academy Award for animated short and Surf’s Up and Monster House were nominated for best animated film. So I guess they’re remaining confident (even though they haven’t hit yet) and are trying new things with aliens (P51) and a children’s book (Chance of Meatballs).

Did you know that Disney tried an online theme park game, and it didn't work?

Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom, also known simply as VMK, was a free massively multiplayer online game run by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Online. It was a virtual representation of the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom theme parks, containing areas and minigames which were based on real park scenery and attractions.
They closed it after two years. So after that failure, they might not try it again, but they probably could do it successfully with a new business plan. Basically, they were only doing it to advertise the parks, rather than making it a separate world that could be magical and could include Disney characters. I even remember seeing these VMK kiosks in the theme parks, where they were obviously trying to build awareness.
I think they should try again with a new name (“Disneyland Online” works), the usual “pay for more features” business model (and the “buy merchandise to also unlock more features” business model), build a version with lower needs for active staff monitoring and involvement (staff cost money, which lowers the profits), add Disney characters, make the park(s) a “magical” place (maybe where you can battle other people, cast spells, or something “magical”), don't try so hard on the boring Disney park ideas (like Hidden Mickeys, pins, etc.), and basically try to make it fun and entertaining like their other online games…

So I definitely think a theme park game should be in there. They just have to make it enjoyable, market it right, and give it a better business model.

Directors Love Actors 3: Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen

Since he discovered Seth Rogen in Vancouver while casting his cult television series "Freaks and Geeks," Judd Apatow has cast the burly Canuck in every single project he's directed, from the "Freaks" follow-up, "Undeclared," to a key supporting turn in Apatow's big-screen debut, "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," and eventually the lead role in last year's "Knocked Up." (He also stars in Apatow's new project, next summer's "Funny People" with Adam Sandler). Along the way, he's encouraged Rogen's own career as a writer, producing the scripts Rogen penned with his writing partner Evan Goldberg for "Superbad" and "Pineapple Express." An auteurist might want to believe that for Apatow, Rogen represents an alter ego for the director, the slovenly secular Jewish, pot-smoking, foul-mouthed guy whose gruff exterior belies his sensitive core. The reality behind the relationship may be a little more practical.
